Flowcall and dbt: complementary today
dbt is the standard for SQL transformation with a model graph, lineage and tests. Flowcall does not replace it today. It runs SQL on a schedule, checks results, and takes the output into approvals and decisions, which dbt does not do.
| dbt | Flowcall | |
|---|---|---|
| SQL modeling | Model graph, ref(), incremental, docs | Single SQL tasks; modeling layer on the roadmap |
| Tests | Schema and data tests in YAML | Plain rules, anomaly detection |
| Scheduling | dbt Cloud or an orchestrator | Built in |
| Decisions | None | Approvals, decision log, outcomes |
| Runs on | Warehouse; CLI anywhere | Windows, Mac, Linux |
Which should you choose?
Keep dbt for transformation. Add Flowcall to run it on a schedule, check what it produced, and route the result to the person who decides.
